Clear filter / Buying / Maintenance
Chemex
Chemex is a pour-over brewer that combines dripper and carafe in one piece. Its thick filter produces a very clean cup, with less sediment and oils than other paper filters.

Definition
What it is and why it matters
Chemex works by percolation: water crosses a coffee bed and falls directly into the lower carafe. The main difference is its thicker filter, which retains more particles and slows flow.
It is excellent for several clear, elegant cups, but requires medium-coarse grind, good filter rinsing and care when handling hot glass.
Key parts
What you need to understand
Glass carafe
Acts as dripper and server. It should be stable, crack-free and easy to hold.
Neck or handle
Wood collar insulates from heat; glass handle simplifies cleaning.
Air channel
The groove lets air escape during filtering. If paper blocks it, flow slows.
Thick filter
Gives high clarity, but requires abundant rinsing and a slightly coarser grind than V60.
Buying
Buying recommendations
To start
A 3- or 6-cup Chemex is enough for one or two large drinks. Remember compatible filters.
To share
6 or 8 cups makes more sense if you brew for several people or serve at the table.
Finishes
Wood collar is classic; glass handle is easier to clean. Handblown is more aesthetic, not necessarily better coffee.
Avoid
Buying only by nominal capacity: Chemex cups are small. Also avoid generic filters that do not fit well.
Maintenance
Use and maintenance
Rinse the filter
Reduces paper taste, heats the glass and helps seat the filter.
Do not hit the neck
Glass resists heat, not impacts or extreme thermal shock.
Wash oils away
Use hot water and gentle cleaning; remove wood collar before soaking.
Store filters dry
Paper absorbs moisture and odors, very visible in clean cups.

Common mistakes
What to avoid
Grinding too fine
The thick filter can choke and extend extraction.
Blocking the air channel
If paper seals the groove, coffee drips slowly and unevenly.
Not preheating
So much glass mass steals temperature early.
Forgetting filters
Chemex depends on its filters; without them it does not work as intended.
